Trans-Canada Highway Twinning in Banff National Park

Twinning the Trans-Canada Highway in Banff National Park from Lake Louise to the British Columbia border includes building a new interchange at the intersection of the Trans Canada Highway and the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93 North). This area of highway has seen several fatal traffic accidents and is considered a serious safety issue. The twinning project will improve both motorist safety and the safe and efficient flow of goods and people.

Innovation in Prince Rupert: Canada Border Services Agency

Inbound port cargo cannot be examined and released by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) until fumigant levels in shipping containers are reduced to safe levels. Venting containers used to take weeks and exposed goods to weather damage.

CBSA has designed a panel that fits into the door of a shipping container and houses a high-output fan that allows air to circulate through the container while protecting the goods from the weather.

This solution provides a safe working environment for CBSA officers and has helped to eliminate backlogs of shipping containers at ports across the country.

South Fraser Perimeter Road

The South Fraser Perimeter Road project involves building a new four-lane divided highway, approximately 40 kilometres long, on the south side of the Fraser River. This will reroute truck traffic away from residential neighbourhoods, thereby improving safety and air quality, and restore municipal roads as uncongested community connectors.

Public and Private Initiatives

Grade Separation Projects along the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor

Stretching 70 kilometres through Delta, Surrey, Langley City, Langley Township and Abbotsford, the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor links the Deltaport Container Terminal and the Westshore Coal Terminal through the B.C. Lower Mainland to the rest of Canada and the economic heartland of North America. While promoting increased trade with the Asia-Pacific region, grade separation projects will also make the rail transportation system safer and cleaner, as well as more efficient and more secure.

Project partners include the Province of British Columbia, Vancouver Port Authority, the Corporation of Delta, the City of Surrey, the City of Langley, the Township of Langley, the British Columbia Railway Company, the Canadian National Railway, the Canadian Pacific Railway and the BNSF Railway.

TransLink is also contributing to the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor project that will allow trains to move safely through the area en route to port, ensuring the safety of every passenger and employee. This will also eliminate the cause of many traffic tie-ups in Langley, Surrey and Delta.

North Shore Trade Area Improvements

The Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, Port Metro Vancouver, TransLink, the City of North Vancouver; District of North Vancouver, the Canadian National Railway, the Canadian Pacific Railway and supporting terminal operators have all invested in five infrastructure improvements on the North Shore of Burrard Inlet. These will enhance rail and port operations and build Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway. They will improve also road safety and port security. The improvements are:

  • Brooksbank Avenue Underpass
  • Neptune/Cargill Grade Separation
  • Low Level Road Re-Alignment
  • Pemberton Avenue Grade Separation
  • Western Lower Level Route Extension to Marine Drive

Canadian Pacific Railway-Crossing Sightline Improvement Program (CSIP)

The CSIP is part of a maintenance planning process to continually improve safety at crossings, while reducing costs and environmental impacts associated with routine maintenance. This program improves sightline conditions to reduce the risk of crossing accidents.

Provincial Programs and Initiatives

Manitoba: Highway Interchange and Grade Separation Project in Portage La Prairie

This project will facilitate truck and rail movements to rail container yards in Winnipeg and other intermodal facilities located in this region. It will also improve access to the border crossing with the United States, to eastern Canadian markets and to the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert. The proposed road and rail grade separation will enhance transportation infrastructure safety and security, as well as improve traffic flow.

Saskatchewan: Saskatoon Circle Drive South Project

When complete, the Circle Drive South Project will link the entire Circle Drive perimeter road system. It will have four new interchanges, four railway grade separations and a four- to six- lane divided freeway. The project also includes the South River Crossing Bridge in the south end of Saskatoon. Improvements to safety and security will include intelligent transportation systems such as an automated anti-icing system for the bridge and variable message signs for drivers.

The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act promotes public safety during the transportation of dangerous goods. Dangerous goods safety marks, which are clearly displayed, identify such goods and raise awareness of the dangers they pose.

Canada’s Railway Safety Act

The Railway Safety Act regulates the operation of railways in Canada to ensure the safety and protection of the public, personnel, property and the environment.

Canada’s Safe Containers Convention Act

The Safe Containers Convention Act maintains a high level of safety for people handling, stacking and transporting containers that are specially designed to facilitate the transport of goods by one or more modes of transport.

Canada’s Marine Transportation Security Act

The Marine Transportation Security Act ensures the security of marine transportation.

Canada’s Motor Vehicle Transport Act

The Motor Vehicle Transport Act requires all motor carriers, including foreign-based motor carriers, to have a safety fitness certificate to operate on Canadian roads.

National Safety Code

The National Safety Code encourages trucking safety, promotes efficiency in the motor carrier industry and achieves consistent safety standards across Canada.
